Eyes of a Lagos Boy takes New York by storm

Bolaji Alonge, aka “Eyes of a Lagos Boy” is an artist, photographer, actor and journalist from Lagos, Nigeria. He organized his first showcase in the United States at Baza Studio in New York on 12th February 2019.

Notwithstanding the weather, the event was attended by the Nigerian Consul in New York, Mr Ella, UN officials, art curators, musicians, artists, press and art aficionados. Bolaji and his wife Sandra hosted a multi-cultural crowd to introduce them to Nigerian culture, music and a generally good time. Baza was the perfect setting, a quintessentially New York photography and art studio in the heart of Manhattan.

This was the first of a series of showcases Bolaji will organize in the coming months. First we take Manhattan, then we will take Antwerp, London…and Moscow is calling.

Bolaji Alonge’s visual language speaks of the wonders of nature and human exchange, urban culture and searches for historical continuity in a world that is sometimes heavily fractured. His lens exposes contrast and conflict while offering an alternative vision of one-ness, order in chaos. His second solo exhibition in November 2018, “Urban Culture – Historical Continuity” was about Nigeria today, fearlessly looking towards the future.

Bolaji also works on social and documentary projects, such as a campaign on the human right to water, the Epe Waterside Health Care Project, that documents small communities living along the Lagos Lagoon and their health challenges, a series of art and photography education workshops at Kiri-Kiri maximum security prison and others. He is a passionate deep sea-diver and activist for ecological justice. He started his company, AWEFIRM RESOURCES LIMITED, in 2014.
