Eyes of a Lagos Boy Photo of the Week series shows a rephotoghraph collage of Lagos – 57 years apart.
On the right of the image is the neo gothic Roman Catholic church inaugurated in 1881 in the heart of Lagos Island. In the middle we see Western House and on the left Independence Building without St Nicholas Hospital in front. The older photo was published in a Life Magazine edition of 1967.
The newer picture was taken by Eyes of a Lagos Boy in April 2024 from the same spot as the magazine photographer, now with the famous hospital added and the cars of today in view. The landscape has not gone through so much changes in the last few decades, but it gives the viewers a lot to compare and search for what is missing or added over the years.

Rephotography captures the essence of time’s passage and the evolution of landscapes, structures and environments. It merges the past with the present, inviting viewers to compare and contrast, fostering a deeper understanding of history, urban development, and the impact of human activity on the world around us. Through rephotography, we witness the dynamic nature of our surroundings, sparking reflections on continuity, change and the interconnectedness of our collective experiences.
