Photo of the week looks at magic hidden in plain sight right in the heart of Lagos Island, Marina. The ‘then’ photo is from a postcard taken around 1924 and first used in August 1925, specially published for the CMS and printed in London. The ‘now’ photo by Eyes of a Lagos Boy, July 2024.

Possibly one of the oldest bookshops in Nigeria, the old CMS bookshop sits at the Odunlami/Broad Street intersection, it was established in 1869 by the Church Missionary Trust.

Shortly after their arrival in Nigeria in 1850s, some CMS Missionaries settled in Marina where they opened a small corner store, right behind the Church of Christ Cathedral to sell Bibles and other Christian articles, it later expanded into a bigger store and became a source to distribute stationery products and educational books for all. The current structure was rebuilt in 1917.
