Felabration 2024 logo – Look and LaughThe much-anticipated Felabration 2024 officially begins today, launching a full week of vibrant musical events that celebrate the life, music and legacy of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, from October 14 to 20, 7pm daily.
Fans and cultural enthusiasts from around the globe will converge for a series of dynamic displays and activities dedicated to the spirit of Fela’s artistry and activism.
Many refer to Fela as a prophet of his generation. The title of his song “Look and Laugh” is the theme of Felabration 2024. He wrote the track after years of singing and campaigning for a better Nigeria.
The regular pre-events of this twenty fourth edition of Felabration already set the tone: the Art Competition, Afrobics Dance Competition and the Dress Fela Fashion Competition. These events showcase remarkable talents inspired by Fela’s ethos, drawing participation from across Nigeria and beyond.
Felabration week officially kicks off with the prestigious Fela Debates, a forum that continues the tradition of critical discourse on pressing societal issues. The event serves as Felabration’s opener and starts at 10:00am on Monday 14 October at NECA Hall, Alausa Ikeja. Theme is “The Geopolitics of Africa and Climate Change” and the debate promises to deliver intellectual fireworks by speakers Adewale Tinubu, Dele Faseemo, Titilayo Oshodi and Desmond Majekodunmi, moderated by Laila Johnson-Salami.
Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti of Felabration revealed to Eyes of a Lagos Boy, “We are proud to announce the opening of Felabration 2024. Music fans can be sure of maximum entertainment in the most natural atmosphere.” She continues, “If you look at the situation in Nigeria today, we can only look and laugh. Otherwise, the tension could be overwhelming. Let us all come together to celebrate the growing and resonating impact of Fela’s message.”
Felabration is a global movement that transcends music, it has evolved into a cultural phenomenon that preserves and spreads Fela’s messages of social justice, human rights and African pride. Daily events take place at the New Africa Shrine and Freedom Park Lagos, as well as numerous others venues around the city including Bature Brewery.
