Every time I recreate a historic photograph, I am reminded that its about searching for more than the perfect vantage point. I search for a moment where the past and the present meet.
Over the years, my “Then and Now” series has taught me that cities don’t simply erase their past—they absorb it. They evolve. They reinvent themselves. Beneath the changing skylines, the widening roads and the new buildings are stories that continue to shape who we are.
People often assume these photographs are about looking back. I see them differently. I am tracing the passage of time through the life of a city.
This is why I often say my “Then and Now” series is not about the past. It is about TIME.
This week’s journey takes us to The Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina—one of Lagos’ most enduring landmarks. Standing at the heart of the city for more than 150 years, it has quietly witnessed Lagos grow from a colonial port into one of Africa’s great megacities.
The photographs below, taken 64 years apart, remind us that while a city is constantly changing, its greatest landmarks become the threads that connect one generation to the next.
