Nigeria’s foremost music and entertainment award show, the Headies is billed to take place at Atlanta’s Cobbs Energy Performing Arts Centre on September 4.
On its 15th edition, formerly known as Hip Hop World Awards, the Headies recognize outstanding musicians and music professionals in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. The annual event, earlier scheduled for July 2 will be held outside Nigeria for the first time since inception in 2006.
The United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard hosted Nigerian artists to a grand reception at her official residence in Lagos. The occasion emceed by Bovi and Basket Mouth was attended by music executives, journalists and public officials including Kenny Ogungbe, Dayo Adeneye, Yemi Sodimu, Abike Dabiri- Erewa of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Nike Okundaye – Nike Art Gallary. Performers of the night were Teni, Rema, DBanj, Goya Menor and Oxlade.
Ayo Animashaun, the CEO of Smooth Entertainment the organizers of the Headies Awards revealed the new date of the event as he encouraged music fans to “Join the movement. This is not about me, Hip TV or even the Headies, this is about the entire entertainment industry. It is a privilege to be the one driving it but it is not possible without partners and industry stakeholders.” Animashaun added, “We want to place the Headies as one of the elite award shows in the world, our music has gone beyond our borders, and our award going global is only a natural consequence.”
Themed “Join the Movement”, Headies 2022 is a festival with the introduction of new categories namely, Best Afrobeat Pop Single (Nigeria), Best Afrobeat Pop Album (Nigeria), Best African Collaboration and Best International Collaboration, African Artist of The Year, Music Executive of the Year and International Artist of the year.
Wizkid bagged the Artist of the Year Award at last year’s edition of the Headies which was dominated by Fireboy DML, ‘Peru’ hitmaker, winning four awards, Best R&B Album, Best Pop Album, Best R&B Single and Best Headies Revelation. Simi and DJ Neptune walked away with two awards apiece.
This year’s winner of the Next Rated category, according to the organizers will become owners of a 2022 Bentley.
