Photo of the Week: Lush Abuja

Eyes of a Lagos Boy – Photo of the Week focuses on Nigeria’s iconic capital city, Abuja and its remarkable landscape that blooms at this time of the year.

A tropical paradise in the heart of Nigeria, Abuja is the country’s oasis and center of unity. The population is estimated at 4,025,735. Abuja has grown by 186,089 in the last year, which is 4.85% annual change, according to the UN World Urbanization Prospects.

The months of May and June sees significant cloudbursts, thunderstorms, rainstorms and showers are quite frequent with June being particularly wet. Daytime temperatures generally range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), with nights cooling down to around 20°C to 23°C (68°F to 73°F). Humidity is relatively high, often above 80%, due to the increased rainfall. These conditions create a lush and green environment.

In 1976 the military Government of Murtala Mohammed decided to relocate the Federal Capital from Lagos to a more central location and set up a panel headed by Justice Akinola Aguda to make recommendations. The Aguda Panel recommended the creation of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the center of the country. Gen. Mohammed proclaimed to this effect on February 3, 1976.

Abuja officially became Nigeria’s capital on December 12, 1991, following significant development and relocation of government offices from Lagos.
