Today we admire the multi-lane highway transformed into a vibrant canvas of lights and sounds as the sun hits Lagos. The busy roads, always alive with the hum of cars, trucks, and buses, all moving in a rhythmic dance. The drone, perched high above the cityscape facing the north of Obalende captures the essence of urban life in all its glory.
Obalende, a conduit axis of Lagos Island, with a major Motor Park leads directly to the Third Mainland Bridge from the south.

Obálendé, a contraction of the Yoruba saying; Ibi ti Oba le wa de, meaning “Where the king chased us to” is a reference to King George V, the king of England in the early 20th century. Right by the artificial moat, McGreggor Canal, Obalende served as a buffer between the colonials residing in Ikoyi and the locals on the Island. The canal is now hidden under the freeway that wraps round the Marina through Obalende on to Africa’s longest bridge over-water.
Today, Obalende remains a significant landmark in Lagos, serving as a gateway to the city’s central business district and connecting various parts of the metropolis.
Experience thriving city streets alive with the calls of vendors, flamboyant night life, the savory aromas of suya, a mix of other street food, and the brilliant colors of traditional clothing.
The highway, a dramatic labyrinth of concrete, weaves through the city. The traffic flow, a continuous stream of vehicles carrying people and goods to and from their destinations.
Commuting in Lagos, particularly to the island, is a significant daily undertaking for many residents. The journey often involves a mix of transportation methods, from crowded buses and ‘danfos’ (minibuses) to private cars, trains and even ferries, with Obalende as one of the major transit zones.

The experience can be challenging due to heavy traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. The sheer volume of people heading to work on the island creates a bustling and vibrant, yet sometimes chaotic. An atmosphere that is actually coming to order of late, a direct result of the statewide road rehabilitation, the Lagos Metro and the high cost of fuel.
The vibrant pulse of Lagos courses through Obalende, a key thoroughfare that exemplifies the city’s energy and staying power.
