Old Masters by Future Masters Art Workshop is a 10-day immersive program in Lagos from July 7 to 18.
This project invites Nigerian emerging artists to explore the timeless painting techniques of 15th and 16th-century Flemish and Dutch Painters, guided by Belgian artist and Professor, Wouter Steel (Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp) and visionary Nigerian painter, Dr Bolaji Ogunwo.

Participants will delve into foundational methods such as imprimatura (toned underpainting), grisaille (monochromatic studies), and chiaroscuro (light-shadow interplay), while dissecting the vibrant color palettes and technical innovations of legends like Rubens and Rembrandt. Through hands-on practice, artists will reconstruct historical workflows—from luminous glazing to dramatic contrasts—and apply these skills to create original works.
The masterclass culminates in a vernissage on 21st July in Lagos, coinciding with Belgium’s National Day, where participants’ artworks will debut. This event bridges Nigerian creativity with European Old Master traditions, symbolizing a vibrant cultural exchange.
Wouter Steel, a celebrated contemporary painter, brings his expertise in expressive oil works that interrogate authenticity, emotion, and the interplay of personal and cultural narratives. Bolaji Ogunwo PhD, a prominent Nigerian visual artist and educator, enriches the program with his exploration of cultural heritage and human expression through bold, vibrant paintings.
Presented by the Belgian Embassy in Nigeria in collaboration with Legacy Art Foundation (LAF) and curated by Eyes of a Lagos Boy. This initiative reflects LAF’s mission to preserve African art while fostering global dialogue.
