The Big Illusion – Album jacket

Nigerian Afrobeat artist, percussionist and vocalist, Tosin Aribisala recently released his single ‘The Big Illusion’ featuring five time Grammy Award winner, Arturo O’Farrill and The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra.

The collaboration started in 2018 when Tosin and Arturo got together for a project honoring the works of the legendary Fela Kuti and the music of Latin America, drawing the connection between the two cultural entities. A synchronicity that even reflects in the birth date of both artists – June 22. A cross-cultural musical exchange between Africa and Latin America, with a phenomenal result.

Released on bandcamp.com ‘The Big Illusion‘ delivers some catchy choruses, soothing horns of classic Afrobeat, with the lead vocals and funky groove on the drums by Tosin, while Arturo expresses some lyrical keyboard solos.

The track is about recognizing the hero and greatness in each individual, even as it comes with a caveat of not being deceived with the so-called comforts of life as a strong part of its message. It possesses infectious rhythm sensibility and versatility.

The multi-instrumentalist and music teacher revealed to eyesofalagosboy.com, “The Big Illusion is about deception in what most societies present as the norm, from unrealistic religious doctrines, non-progressive politics, shady economic terms to even the kinds of foods we consume, which later have adverse effects on us. Being aware and vigilant is required to make the world a better place.”

Tosin has shared his talents with various artists including Femi Kuti, Taj Mahal, Baba Maal, Fatoumata Diawara, Spyro Gyra, Julie Dexter, and many other producers.

Based in California and signed to Ropeadope Records, Tosin Aribisala’s music tells of the stories of his life, his African culture, his people, and his global outlook. His songs are portrayed in a mix of jazz, Yoruba rhythm, afrobeat, and funk. Tosin calls this mix, the Afrikan Rhapsody. “My music is a mixture of African rhythmic textures and some elements of jazz and blues, with lyrics of hope, love and human realities.” He said.
