Wild Lagos – Epe – Eyes of a Lagos Boy 2018

Our Photo of the week is a cycle of nature shot of an agama lizard masticating a grasshopper in the coastal village of Oriba, Epe, Lagos. A reminder that Lagos runs a complete ecosystem and offers a unique opportunity to experience nature at its finest. From exotic bird species to rare mammals, this region boasts a rich biodiversity that will leave nature enthusiasts in awe.

Nestled amidst lush greenery and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Epe is a serene town located in the eastern part of the state. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Over 54 communities, most of them only reachable by boat are tucked deep in the Epe-Lekki lagoon; Ologbokere, Emina, Sagaa, Oko Abe, Ito Omu, Ibon, Bodun amongst others takes a round trip of about 200 km on water. It is a mangrove forest teeming with wildlife. The coastal terrain of Epe is Kerala, Amazon and some deep rainforests in South East Asia combined.

One of the highlights of the wildlife in Epe is the presence of various bird species. From colorful kingfishers to majestic eagles, monkeys, frogs, manatees and others. The tranquil surroundings make it an ideal spot for capturing stunning photographs or simply immersing oneself in the calming sounds of nature.

Even as infrastructure continues to grow in Epe, including ongoing road expansion projects and a deep seaport facility. Epe still hold magic in its very core, nature’s magic that must be protected.
