Idanre is a key tourist destination in Nigeria, comprising a historic town encircled by rolling hills and distinctive topography in Southwest Nigeria. Idanre is about 20km from Akure, the capital city of Ondo state with a different dialect.

Idanre is distinguished by its breathtaking natural beauty, showcasing one of  Nigeria’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. Its allure is heightened by the historical fact that the people of Idanre, known by the ancients as Ufẹ̀ Òkè (Upper Ife) dwelled on these boulders since antiquity.

According to oral traditions, the people of Idanre migrated from Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba people, and settled in the area due to its natural fortification provided by the hills. It was once an independent kingdom with its own monarchy. The Owa of Idanre is the traditional ruler and custodian of the town’s heritage.

The hills are home to various natural attractions that include, “Ibi Alamo” (a large rock with a footprint believed to be that of a giant), the “Oke Orosun” (a sacred site for traditional worship), and the “Agboogun Footprint.”

Idanre is located on a Precambrian igneous batholith that is about 500 Million years old, and is cut by several large fractures that form deep valleys within the rocks. The word Idanre itself connotes enchantment, as the early settlers exclaimed ‘Idán rèè’! on seeing the majestic view. Meaning, ”This is magic”.
